In December 2004, the MFC unveiled a comprehensive proposal for a financially and politically viable way to extend equal funding to all qualifying faith-based schools. This proposal was presented to Gerard Kennedy, education minister for the province of Ontario. You can find the proposal at www.equalfunding.org, which provides the government with a means to ensure that faith-based schools are fully accountable to the public, as a condition for receiving funding. The proposal addressed the 1999 United Nations Human Rights Committee ruling that the Government of Ontario's funding of the religious education of all Roman Catholic children, but not those of other faith groups is in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In April 2007, the MFC held a School Funding Symposium: A Multicultural Initiative. The MFC gave the media and school faculty the opportunity to hear from and engage a distinguished panel of academics and education researchers, discussing initiatives to promote government funding for faith-based schools. An MFC video was also distributed at the symposium. | |||||
